Project Hipobiz (Federal Polytechnic Mubi)

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched,every rocket fired signifies in the final sense,a theft from those who hunger and are not fed,those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweats of its lebourers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life in any sense.Under the clouds of war, its humanity hanging on a cross of iron”.

                                                                   Dwight D. Eisenhower

The purpose of our project is to emphasise the complex matrix between social exclusion and crime, in order to impress on policy makers that an effective response to crime must, at the front end, involve investment in early intervention to combat social and educational disadvantage to prevent vulnerable young people embarking on criminality in the first instance.

Our immediate communities; Muvudi and Vintim is been poised with a great challenge of poverty and unemployment. This gave birth to what is termed as the viciouse circle of social exclusion and crime drivers of poverty in these regions.These, have seen a lot of youths turn into tools for all sorts of crimes, most especially political thuggering.

The problem of poverty and how to reduce it remains the most pressing dilemma in both the local and international community. In tackling this issue,we considered two approaches;

The first is, directly tackling the causes and consequences of poverty, and the second with a strong focus on economic growth.

Nigeria’s poverty levels were exacerbated by forty years of military rule and until the present, by weak economic and political governance made worse by the perverse effects of the oil economy. The preoccupation with oil has retarded activity in other areas of the economy (particularly agriculture and manufacturing), reducing non-oil sector economic growth, fuelling unemployment and exacerbating poverty and conflict.

Hence, as a way of responding to the needs of these people,we took education to their door steps special reachout programms wchich gave birth to HIPOBIZ,an accronym for Health,Info-communication,Politics and Bussines . It is managing the political risks associated with, or by those in need. This is targeted to certain groups not only to the poor but those “needy” (chronically poor and those in special circumstances such as disability Membership of a disadvantaged community, consistent poverty and parental conflict.Some young offenders have even expressed how their social disadvantage directly led them into criminality as many came from poverty stricken areas characterised by high levels of drug use.
